Interleukin-6
| Alternate Names | IL-6, IL6, Cytokine |
| Intended Use | Used for the quantitative determination of interleukin-6. |
| Clinical Significance | IL6 is a mediator of the immune system, which has a wide variety of biological actions such as inflammation, acute phase response and regulation of metabolic processes. Elevated levels may occur in a variety of acute and chronic disease associated with inflammation, such as sepsis, neoplastic disorders, autoimmune diseases, AIDS, alcoholic liver disease, and infections, or transplant rejection. Furthermore, elevated levels of IL6 have been associated with an excess of cholesterol-laden macrophages in arterial walls, systemic arterial inflammation, and an increased risk of cardiovascular events. |
