Patient 24-hour urine collection instructions

Day 1: Starting the Process
1. Empty your bladder. Do not save this urine.
2. Note the time. Write the exact date and time as this is the official start time of the 24-hour collection.
3. Collect every sample. For the next 24 hours, collect all urine.
a. For high urine output: Patients with a high urine output will require more than one container. Collect urine in the first container until            it is 3/4 full and then begin filling the second container to complete the 24-hour collection.

Storage Instructions – Keep it cold. Store the urine container in a refrigerator or on ice in a cooler throughout the entire 24-hour period.

Day 2: Finishing the Process
1. Final collection. Exactly 24 hours after your start time, urinate and add to urine container.
2. Note the end time. Write the exact date and time the collection was completed.
3. Return the urine container and the collection form to requesting provider.
